Birds of the Goose order (Anseriformes) in secondary waterlogged peatland communities
Abstract
Secondary waterlogging (environmental remediation) is a set of measures to recreate natural environmental conditions in depleted peat deposits, contributing to the restoration of optimal hydrological regime, biosphere functions of bogs and peat formation processes, with further rational (sustainable) use of peatland resources. The Republic of Belarus is a recognized international leader in the ecological rehabilitation of disturbed peat deposits. Since 2006, three international technical assistance projects have been successfully implemented on the territory of the country, jointly with the UN Development Program, the Global Environment Facility and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Belarus: «Peatlands-1», «Peatlands-2» and «Wetlands». As a result of the implemented works and water level rise on the territory of secondary waterlogged waste peatlands, quite favorable conditions for waterfowl and wetland bird communities were formed.
