PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION IN THE RELIGIOUS AND PHILOSOPHICALHERITAGE OF PROFESSOR P. YA. SVETLOV

Abstract

The article presents an attempt at a historical and psychological analysis of the religious and philosophical heritage of professor of the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir Pavel Svetlov, who was one of the outstanding theologians
and intellectuals of the late 19th — early 20th centuries, a representative of the spiritual and academic philosophy. The author of the article, relying on a number of works of the mentioned religious thinker, including articles from the
church-public press, and individual treatises and monographs, shows that in his understanding of the problems associated with the psychological study of religion Professor Svetlov methodologically proceeded from the theistic positions of Orthodox anthropology, which determined the specificity of a great number of his conclusions and ideas. At the same
time, the thinker did not ignore the latest achievements in the field of research not only Russian, but also foreign psychological
and psychiatric science (the most authoritative German, British and French scientists of his time in the field he studied are often cited). The study and rethinking of individual ideas and provisions available in Professor P. Ya. Svetlov’s works may be interesting not only in the context of studying the historical heritage of Russian psychology of religion, but it can be assumed that some of his ideas have not lost their relevance and can serve as initial premises for a deeper understanding of the inner world of a religious person.
