The aim of this paper is to study the possible loss of performance attributes of engine oil during the operation
of vehicles such as: engine oil density at 15 °C, the content of mechanical impurities and water, in order to clarify the
actual timing of engine oil change.
The scientific novelty of the work consists in obtaining new experimental data on the change in the density of
engine oil at 15 °C, the content of mechanical impurities and water in semi-synthetic motor oils of the SAE 10W40
brand manufactured by LUKOIL and Ursa, with an increase in vehicle mileage.
The introduction contains brief information on the performance attributes of engine oil such as, engine oil
density at 15 °C, the content of mechanical impurities and water.
The main part of the article presents the results of a study of changes in the properties of motor oil in vehicle
operation. It is shown that the mass fraction of mechanical impurities during the operation of the vehicle for the studied
brands of oil is within the allowable limit with a mileage of up to 12 thousand km. When the vehicle has run more
than 16 thousand km, the content of mechanical impurities in the engine oils under study exceeds the permissible value.
Studies have shown that LUKOIL VANGUARD ULTRA SAE 10W40 motor oil possesses better performance
attributes according to the studied parameters than Ursa Premium TD SAE 10W40 motor oil. It is advisable to replace
the motor oil after 16 thousand km of run due to a significant excess of the content of mechanical impurities in the
studied samples of motor oils.
The results of the research will be useful to mechanical engineers when determining the timing for changing
the engine oil used in diesel internal combustion engines of cargo buses in order to increase the reliability and efficiency
of engine components and assemblies.
