Abstract

To conduct the research, steel grades were selected that are most often used or suitable for the manufacture of
chipping knives, X12, X12MF, 5XHM, 6XB2S, U8, U8A, 9XC, HVG in particular. The studies of the structure and
hardness of these steels showed that, after ausforming, high-carbon steels form a martensitic base with a large amount
of carbides, which indicates the high hardness and low ductility of most of the steels under consideration, which
makes them unsuitable for the manufacture of chipping knives operating under shock load conditions. For the manufacture
of chopping knives, 6KHV2S, 5KHNM and KHVG steels can be recommended, which, after ausforming, have
a finely dispersed homogeneous structure that provides both high hardness and sufficient ductility.
