Abstract

The article deals with the main approaches to the definition of the concept of “cultural code” and reviews the work on the use of
culture codes in literary works. The place of the code in the communicative models of R. Jacobson, Yu. Lotman and U. Eco is considered.
The term “cultural code” was first used in linguoculturology by V. Telia, under which the totality of cultural ideas about the
picture of the world was considered. Researchers M. Tolstoy, S. Tolstaya, M. Kaushova, M. Gudkov, M. Epstein consider the cultural
code as a system of signs. The totality of methods of social practice, “the rules of the game of collective being” are the essence of
the cultural code, according to V. Maslovа, M. Pimenova, G. Mezenka. A. Melnikova argues that cultural codes are the deep
meanings of a certain culture.
