The article is devoted to the consideration of the problem of the translation of proper nouns in a literary narrative text on the example of the novel “People in the marsh” which was written by I. Melezh. The use of a foreign proper noun is seen as an act of interlingual and cross-cultural communication, the result of which is interaction of two cultural traditions. Poethonyms are regarded as a medium of extralinguistic information and national colouring, thus the problem of poethonyms translation is particularly topical. The article deals with different ways to translate the proper nouns used by I. Melezh in the novel “People in the marsh” into the Slavic (Russian and Polish) and Germanic (German and English) languages. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that the problem of transfering of the equivalence of poethonyms is considered taking into account phonetic and lexical peculiarities of the Slavic and Germanic languages. This approach allows us to assess the appropriateness of the aesthetic influence of the original text and its translations into different languages.
