Abstract

In recent decades, interest in the subject of historical science, its categories and methods has increased. However, the origins of historical consciousness have not yet been sufficiently studied and this varies, first of all, in the ancient East in general and in relation to ancient Mesopotamia in particular. This issue became relevant in the last years of Soviet historiography, and in Russian and Belarusian historical science interest in this topic has increased significantly.

Historiography is one of the forms of theoretical understanding of the historical process. Soviet Assyriology in the initial period of its activity (20s - early 50s of the twentieth century) became the time of the formation of new evaluative approaches from the point of view of Marxist historiosophy to the problems of cultural development, including in the aspect of the origin and development of historical knowledge. The foundations of these new evaluative positions remained, albeit with certain variations, until the end of the Soviet period.

In this article, the authors consider the evaluative approaches of Soviet historiography of the period of the 20s - early. 50s XX century to the problems of the emergence and development of historical knowledge in the Babylonian kingdom in the civilizational and cultural aspect as part of the Sumerian-Akkadian-Babylonian civilization.
