Abstract

The article discusses the contribution of Belarusian scientists of the second half of XIX — early XX century into the study of the
Slavs origin problem. An overview of the historiography on the subject of the article is conducted; the information potential of the used sources on the basis of which the present work is written is identified; the methodological principles and research methods are described.

The article illustrates dependence of the findings of Belarusian researchers of Slavic ethnogenesis from existing at a certain
period European and Russian Slavic Studies traditions. The point of view of Belarusian scientists of that period is analyzed on the
following issues: the place of the Slavs among the peoples of the Indo-European language family; the ratio of the Slavs and Balts in the
composition of this family; the possibility to use linguistic sources when identifying the territory of the Slavic ancestral homeland;
localization of the ancestral home.
