Abstract

The article deals with one of the most urgent issues of modern methodology of history — the subject of historical science. The
author analyzes the interpretation of this issue in Russian positivist historiography. The goal of the present research is to provide an
overview of the subject of history in the works of outstanding representatives of the “first’’ positivism in Russia.

The points of view of Russian scientists on the specific tasks of history, its place in the system of scientific knowledge are
represented. The difference between two approaches — classical positivism and the researchers' of this issue — are revealed. The
scientific idea on the nature of historical consistent patterns is described.

It is concluded that scientists considered history to be a branch of knowledge dealing with certain past and having separate
events and phenomena as a subject. Russian historians did their best to defend the scientific status of history as a branch of science along with sociology, thus they contributed a lot to the development of the theory and methodology of history.
