Abstract

The work is devoted to the analysis of the concept of restorative justice and mediation in criminal matters
as a way of its implementation. Restorative justice is seen in the context of the evolution of modern criminal justice
as a milestone in the historical search for more adequate and value-acceptable ways of responding to crime. The work
reveals the concept and goals of restorative justice as a method of conflict resolution, as well as the features of its
application in criminal cases; the origins of the establishment of restorative justice in criminal matters are determined.
Also, the article includes the list of countries in which restorative justice is spread; a number of factors that influenced the
formation of modern restorative justice are given, the prospects of its implementation and development in the direction of
building a truly civil society are considered. Particular attention is paid to the Circles of Justice as one of the restorative
criminal justice programs.
