Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration and definition of the term “titular tradition” in relation to the specifics of public institutions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Representatives of the magnate class played a special role in the
public life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th and 18th centuries. With the emergence of foreign titles of the Holy Roman Empire in the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the XVI century, large titular estates appeared in
the system of magnate land ownership. The ideological content of titular estates is inextricably linked with the semantic
content of personal titles. Defining the essence of the titular tradition in the social structure of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania will allow a new look at the cultural processes of that time and the degree of their integration into European
cultural processes, where the titular tradition is firmly established in society.
