Abstract

The article is devoted to the activities of the Mogilev Epiphany Orthodox Brotherhood at the first stage of development (1883—1884). The article reveals the purpose of creation of the specified church-public organization in 1883. The assistance to this organization during its establishment by some state institutions and officials was examined. The approach of the fraternal council to the work of the Epiphany Union in the first year was revealed. The activities of the Epiphany Orthodox Brotherhood to promote the development of church schools in the Mogilev diocese were analyzed. The organization of folk religious and moral readings by the fraternal union in the period under review is considered in detail. The influence of fraternal readings on the religious life of the Mogilev
region is shown. It is concluded that the activities of the Mogilev Epiphany Orthodox Brotherhood were aimed at strengthening the positions of the Russian Orthodox Church and the development of Russian culture in the Mogilev region.
